Where to start with SEO for your online store: structure, keywords and content planning

SEO isn't something you bolt on after launch. It's long-term work that starts with your site structure. Get the technical and structural foundations right, then plan content around keywords, and results build over time.

SEO takes time to pay off, but once it works, it brings steady, low-cost traffic. Many sites only think about SEO after launch, then discover the site structure is wrong and has to be rebuilt from scratch.

Step 1: Technical basics

  • Your site can be crawled normally and isn’t accidentally set to noindex.
  • Pages load fast and work well on mobile.
  • URLs are short and meaningful, using words rather than a string of numbers.
  • Generate a sitemap and submit it to Google Search Console.
  • Use HTTPS.

Step 2: Site structure

A good structure helps both search engines and shoppers find content quickly:

  • Home → category pages → product or article pages, without too many levels.
  • Every category page has its own introductory copy, not just a product grid.
  • Related pages link to each other, for example product pages to related articles and articles to products.

Step 3: Keyword planning

  • List what buyers might search for: product names, uses, problems and comparisons.
  • Group them by search intent: informational keywords suit articles, while buying keywords belong on product and category pages.
  • Focus each page on one group of closely related keywords, so your pages don’t compete for the same term.

Step 4: Content

  • Product pages: clearly cover specs, uses and advantages, and avoid copying the supplier’s description.
  • Articles: answer the questions buyers actually care about, such as buying guides, how-tos and FAQs.
  • Regular updates work better than publishing lots of posts at once.

Step 5: Keep monitoring

In Search Console, keep an eye on:

  • which pages are indexed and which aren’t;
  • which keywords bring impressions and clicks;
  • any crawl errors or mobile usability issues.

How long does it take?

A new site usually needs several months to see clear growth in organic traffic, and longer in competitive industries. SEO works best as a long-term channel alongside paid ads. For structure optimization and content planning, see our SEO & content service.
